72 Hours

When did we become married to the idea that "three days and three nights" must be exactly 72 hours?

1 Sam 30:12And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

Does anyone suppose this MUST also be exactly 72 hours? Of course not.

Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Matt 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

So neither of these must be exactly 72 hours. But it can't be more than 72 hours or a 4th day enters the picture, and that does violate scripture.

If I say, "See you in three days!" we don't all synchronize our watches to the exact second.
